Solve the following pair of equations by method of substitution
x+y=3 and 2x+5y=12

Open in App
Solution

Given equations are
x+y=3 ....(1)
and 2x+5y=12 ....(2)
Therefore, x=3y ....(3)
Substitute this value of x in equation (2), we get
2(3y)+5y=12
62y+5y=12
6+3y=12
3y=6
y=2
Put this value in equation (3)
x=3y=32=1
Therefore, solution is x=1,y=2.
