Solution

Dear Student,

(1) Electronic configuration of O = 1s2 2s2 2p4 (ground state) =1s2 2s2 2px2 2py1 2pz1 (excited state)Hence, it undergoes sp3 hybridisation to give tetrahedral structure, but due to repulsion its shape is V-shape.To form H3O+, the lone pair is donated and electron of H occupies the orbital so that hybridisation is sp3 and shape is tetrahedral.(2) Electronic configuration of Al = 1s2 2s2 2p63s2 3p1 (ground state) =1s2 2s2 2p6 3s1 3px13py1 (excited state)Hence, it undergoes sp2 hybridisation to give planar triangular structure. To form AlCl4-, the empty 3pz orbital is also involved so that hybridisation is sp3 and shape is tetrahedral.(3) Electronic configuration of N = 1s2 2s2 2p3 (ground state) =1s2 2s2 2px1 2py1 2pz1(excited state)Hence, it undergoes sp3 hybridisation to give tetrahderal structure, but due to repulsion of electrons it becomes pyramidal. To form NH4+, the lone pair is donated and electron of H occupies the orbital so that hybridisation is sp3 and shape is tetrahedral.
