Manganese dioxide and copper (II) oxide

Open in App
Solution

With Hydrochloric acid:

  1. Upon heating Manganese Dioxide (MgO2) with concentrated Hydrochloric acid (HCl), a greenish-yellow gas is evolved. This gas is Chlorine.

MnO2(g)+4HCl(aq)ΔMnCl2(aq)+2H2O(l)+Cl2(g)

2. Upon heating Copper (II) Oxide (CuO) with concentrated Hydrochloric acid HCl, no gas is evolved.

CuO(s)+2HCl(aq)ΔCuCl2(aq)+H2O(l)

Hence, Hydrochloric acid (HCl) can be used to distinguish between Manganese Dioxide and Copper (II) Oxide.
