Solution

When iron (III) chloride FeCl3 reacts with sodium hydroxide NaOH, the formation of a reddish brown colored precipitate of ferric hydroxide (Fe(OH)3) takes place.

  • The reaction can be represented as:

FeCl3(aq)+3NaOH(aq)Fe(OH)3+3NaCl(aq)Reddishbrown

This precipitate is insoluble in excess of sodium hydroxide solution.
