Pollution in Delhi

Delhi has the maximum number of vehicles in India. Major cause of air pollution in Delhi is due to vehicular emission resulting from excessive combustion of fossil fuels.

All these made Delhi rank fourth among the 41 most polluted cities in the world during the 1990s.

Steps taken by the Government

A public interest litigation was filed in the Supreme Court of India ensuring that the Government took action to reduce the air pollution in Delhi. Steps taken by the Government were as follows:-
  1. Changing the fuel of the public transport to CNG which is a cleaner fuel.
  2. Establishing strict pollution levels norms for vehicles.
  3. Ensuring that vehicles use unleaded petrol, low-sulphur petrol or diesel and catalytic converters.
  4. Slowly phasing out old vehicles.
