Question

The dissociation constants  of two acids HA1 and HA2  with equal concentrations are 3×104 and 1.8×105 respectively. The relative strength of the acids will be :

A
1:4
loader
B
4:1
loader
C
1:16
loader
D
16:1
loader

Solution

The correct option is D 4:1
Given,  Ka1(HA1)=3×104,Ka2(HA2)=1.8×1013
The formula to calculate the relative strength of a weak acid is :
[HA]=Ka×C
The ratio of stregnth of two given acids with equal concentrations is [HA1][HA2]=Ka1×CKa2×C[HA1][HA2]=Ka1Ka2=3×1041.8×105[HA1][HA2]=16.71=41
So , the ratio of strength of two acids are [HA1]:[HA2]=4:1
