Question

The equivalence conductances of sodium chloride, hydrochloric acid and sodium acetate at infinite dilution are 126.45,426.16 and 91.0 ohm1 cm2 eq1, respectively at 25 oC.
Calculate the equivalent conductance (in ohm1 cm2 eq1) of acetic acid at infinite dilution.

Solution

According to Kohlrausch's law,
ΛCH3COONa=λCH3COO+λNa+=91.0 ...(i) ΛHCl=λH++λCl=426.16 ...(ii) ΛNaCl=λNa++λCl=126.45 ...(iii)
Adding equations (i) and (ii) and subtracting equation (iii),
λCH3COO+λNa++λH++λClλNa+λCl=91.0+426.16126.45
λCH3COO+λH+=390.7 ohm1 cm2 eq1=ΛCH3COOH=390.7 ohm1 cm2 eq1
