  • The Kushans belonged to a nomadic tribe which had migrated to India from Central Asia. They were the descendants of Yuchi.
  • Kujala Kadphisus was the founder of this dynasty. Vimakadphisus and Kanishka were some of the important kings of this dynasty.
  • Kujala Kadphisus united the different factions of the Yuchi tribe. He crossed the Hindukush range and settled in Kabul and Kashmir.
  • Kanishka succeeded Vimakadphisus. Under Kanishka, the Kushan Dynasty expanded significantly.
  • He established his rule in 78 C.E. and marked the beginning of the ‘Shaka-era’.
  • The Kushans influenced Indian history and culture and gave special emphasis to the spread of Buddhism. They patronised Mahayana Buddhism.
  • The Gandhara sculptures also flourished during their time.
