Question

The latent heat of fusion of ice is 330 J g1. Calculate the number of photons of radiation of frequency 5×1013 s1 to cause the melting of 1 mole of ice. Take h=6.6×1034 J s. Express your answer as X×1023, what is the value of X?

Solution

Heat required for melting 1 mole (18 g) of ice =330×18=5940 J
Energy of one phton =hv
=6.6×1034×5×1013=33×1021 J
Total number of photons required =5940 J33×1021 J=18×1022
=1.8×1023
X=1.8
