Question

The mass number and number of electrons of an ion are given as 18 and 10 respectively.Charge of the ion is -2.Find the symbol, atomic number, number of protons and number of neutrons of the ion.

Open in App
Solution

  • Given the ion having a charge of -2 has 10 electrons. Then the number of electrons in the neutral atom will be =(10-2)=8.
  • A neutral atom with 8 electrons will have 8 protons as well. Hence the atomic number of the element is 8.
  • Since the atomic number is 8, it is oxygen atom.
  • Oxygen on gaining a charge of -2 will have the symbol: O-2
  • Number of neutrons=(mass number - atomic number)=(18-8)=10.
  • symbol=O-2 , atomic number=8, number of protons=8, number of neutrons=10
