Solution

Manufacture of Ammonia NH3 by Haber's Process:

  • In this process, a mixture of pure dry nitrogen N2 (obtained by fractional distillation of air) and hydrogen gas H2 in the ratio of 1:3 by volume is compressed to 200-500 atmospheric pressure.
  • The compressed gases are passed over heated catalyst of iron at a temperature of 450°C to 500°C.
  • N2+3H2Fe500°C,250atm2NH3+22,400cal

Reducing Action of Ammonia:

  • Ammonia is a strong reducing agent. It reduces metallic oxides and chlorine.
  • Ammonia reduces copper(II) oxide(CuO) into metallic copper.
  • 3CuO(s)+2NH3(g)3Cu(s)+3H2O(l)+N2(g)

  1. The process is Haber's process.
  2. The reactants must be taken in the ratio 1:3.
  3. Iron is used as catalyst.
  4. N2(g)+3H2(g)Fe500°C,250atm2NH3(g)+22,400cal
  5. 3CuO(s)+2NH3(g)3Cu(s)+3H2O(l)+N2(g)
