Is the root pressure positive or negative?

Open in App
Solution

Root Pressure:

  1. Root pressure is a force or hydrostatic pressure that is generated in the roots.
  2. Root pressure helps in driving the fluids and other ions from the soil in upward directions.
  3. Osmotic pressure is the reason behind the working of this process.
  4. Root pressure is more common during the spring seasons as the leaves are not developed and the rate of transpiration is rapid.
  5. When various ions from the soil are carried into the vascular tissues of the roots, water follows, increasing the pressure inside the xylem.
  6. This pressure is known as root pressure.
  7. Root pressure pushes up water in small stems.
  8. Thus, root pressure is said to be positive.
