Question

The vertices of a rectangle are E(-1,1),F(-1,3),G(-5,3) and H(-5,1). Find the coordinates of the figure after reflecting in the x-axis, and then translating 3 units right.

Solution

Step 1: Find the coordinates of image after reflection in the x-axis.

Given, coordinates are E(-1,1),F(-1,3),G(-5,3) and H(-5,1)

As we know that reflection about the x-axis then coordinate changes as:

A(x,y)=A'(x,-y)

Using the criteria of reflection about x-axis:

E(-1,1)=E'(-1,-1)F(-1,3)=F'(-1,-3)G(-5,3)=G'(-5,-3)H(-5,1)=H'(-5,-1)

Step 2: Find the coordinates of image after translation.

Coordinates obtained in the above step are E'(-1,-1),F'(-1,-3),G'(-5,-3),H'(-5,-1) and a=3,b=0

Using the above criteria of translation are,

E'(-1,-1)=E''(-1+3,-1+0)=E''(2,-1)F'(-1,-3)=F''(-1+3,-3+0)=F''(2,-3)G'(-5,-3)=G''(-5+3,-3+0)=G''(-2,-3)H'(-5,-1)=H''(-5+3,-1+0)=H''(-2,-1)

Step 3: Final answer.

Hence, the coordinates of image after reflection in the x-axis are E'(-1,-1),F'(-1,-3),G'(-5,-3),H'(-5,-1) and after translation the coordinates are E''(2,-1),F''(2,-3),G''(-2,-3),H''(-2,-1).
