Question

Two identical solid spheres each of mass 1.20 kg and radius 10.0 cm are fixed at the ends of a light rod so that the separation between the centres is 50.0 cm. Find the moment of inertia (kgm2) of the system about an axis perpendicular to the rod passing through its middle point.

Solution

From given, we can visualize as shown
for a single body,
Moment of inertia (Icm)
Iyy=Icm+Mx2Iyy=25MR2+Mx2

putting all values,
Iyy=251.2×0.12+1.2×0.252Iyy=0.08 kgm2

Because here two identical sphere, so
Iyy=0.08×2Iyy=0.16 kgm2
