Question

We know that large size of a donour atom increases nucleophilicity. Then why in case of a polar aprotic solvent , the nucleophilicity trend for halide ions is- F->Cl->Br->I-??

Solution

Dear student,In non polar solvents, the solvation factor is absent. Bigger anions are still more polarizable and can interact in a better way with the LUMO.Also naked” anions are highly reactive both as bases and nucleophiles. So order gets reversed.
