Question

What amount (in milli mole) of sodium acetate (CH3COONa) must be added to 2 L of 0.1 M acetic acid solution to given a solution of pH = 3 [Given: Ka(CH3COOH)=105]

Open in App
Solution

CH3COOH(aq)+H2O(l)CH3COO(aq)+H3O+(aq)t=00.1 M00t=t0.1xxx
Ka=x20.1x
As it is a weak acid then (0.1x)0.1
[H3O+]=x=Ka×0.1=103
pH=3
On addition of CH3COONa, pH will change. So, we don't have to add any CH3COONa, to form a solution of pH = 3.
So, answer is 0.
