It is a process involving the bulk transport of materials into cells by membranes.
It occurs by infolding or extension of the cell surface membrane to form a vesicle or the vacuole.
The types of endocytosis are as follows–
Cellular eating or phagocytosis occurs when dissolved material enters cells. The plasma membrane engulfs the solid material, which forms a phagocytic vesicle
Cellular drinking or pinocytosis occurs when the plasma membrane starts to fold inwards, forming a channel that allows dissolved particles entry into cells. The liquid is filled with a pinocytic vesicle as soon as the channel closes.
The receptor-mediated endocytosis occurs when the particular molecule in fluids wraps cells associated with specialized receptors in the plasma membrane. Like pinocytosis, the plasma membrane folds inwards and starts forming a vesicle.
