Meristems:

  1. Meristem is them is a type of tissue found in plants which consists of an differentiated cells that are capable of dividing.
  2. The cells in this tissue can develop into all the other tissues and organs that occur in plants.
  3. On the basis of position this tissue is of three types:
  • Lateral meristems:
  1. These are seen in the stems and roots on the lateral side.
  2. They increase the thickness of the plant.
  3. The two examples of lateral meristems are cork cambium and vascular cambium.
  • Intercalary meristems:
  1. These tissues are seen in the leaves and the internodes at the inter-calary section.
  2. They help in increasing the length of the intonodes.
  • Apical meristem:
  1. These tissues are found at the tips of the roots and shoots.
  2. Their main function is to increase the height of the plants.
