Valency:

The combining capacity of the atom of an element with the atoms of other elements to acquire eight electrons in its outermost shell is called valency.

Types of valency:

Valency is of two types: Electrovalency and Covalency

  1. Electrovalency: When an element combines with another element by losing and gaining electrons to form a compound, its valency is called electrovalency.
  2. Covalency: The number of electrons shared by an atom with another atom during the formation of covalent molecule to have eight electrons in its outermost shell is known as covalency.
