Question

What are the factors that influence osmosis and how do they affect osmosis?

Open in App
Solution

Dear Student

Osmosis is the process of movement of solvent from dilute solution towards the concentrated solution through a semipermeable membrane. Osmosis is affected by various factors such as temperature, concentration gradient and permeability of membrane.

Temperature- If the temperature is increased , rate of osmosis also increases because of increase in kinetic energy of water molecules

Concentration gradient- osmosis will not occur in absence of concentration gradient, as water moves from its higher concentration gradient to lower concentration gradient.

Permeability of membrane also plays a role in osmosis. Osmosis will not occur if the membrane is impermeable to water.
