Question

What are the roles played by the atmosphere in climate control?

Open in App
Solution

Atmosphere: The atmosphere is a thick blanket of air that is formed of various layers. It envelops a planetary body and is tethered to its position by the gravitational energy of the planet.

The atmosphere plays the following roles in climate control:

  1. Since it is composed of non-metallic gases, the atmosphere is a poor conductor of heat. As a result, it regulates the temperature on Earth and influences climate.
  2. The greenhouse gases present in the atmosphere capture sunlight and keep the climate warm during the day.
  3. During the night, the atmosphere prevents the complete loss of the trapped heat and prevents the freezing of the planet.
  4. The ozone layer prevents harmful UV rays to penetrate the atmosphere and protects us from skin cancer and painful sunburns.
