Question

What are the two phases used in chromatography?

Open in App
Solution

Chromatography: This technique was originally used to separate a mixture into its chemical components based on colour, but is now used more widely. The principle behind chromatography is the capacity of a chemical to be adsorbed on a medium. The rates of adsorption of different chemicals on a medium vary.

  • There are two important components or phases in chromatography.
  • The stationary phase is the medium onto which the components of the mixture are adsorbed.
  • The mobile phase is the solvent in which the components of the mixture dissolve, and which carries these components.
