Question

What are the types of endocytosis?

Open in App
Solution

Endocytosis: The process by which the molecules are actively transported into the cell by engulfing them through the cellular membrane.

Types of endocytosis: These include phagocytosis, pinocytosis, and receptor-mediated endocytosis.

Phagocytosis:

  1. The process of endocytosis is used by macrophages, monocytes, neutrophils, eosinophils, and dendritic cells to kill the foreign particles by engulfing them.
  2. The type of endocytosis kills the foreign particle by engulfing it through the cell membrane of the cell and forms a phagosome.

Pinocytosis:

  1. It is also known as cell drinking and is common in both plant cells and animal cells during this type of endocytosis.
  2. The cell takes in substances like water and nutrients from the extracellular fluid, which needs to function inside the cell.

Receptor-mediated endocytosis:

  1. The specialized type of endocytosis is in which macromolecules bind to the receptor that contains a protein called clathrin coat.
  2. When the macromolecule and receptor bind to each other, the complex is formed in the form of vesicles surrounded by clathrin coats. It is transported into the cell.
