Sperm:

  1. A male reproductive cell or male germ cell that is produced by the males in most of the animals and humans.
  2. Sperm helps in the fertilization of the ovum (female reproductive cell) which gives rise to the zygote eventually a living organism.

Types of sperms:

There are two types of sperm cells: X sperm and Y sperm.

X sperm:

  1. X sperm on combining with the X chromosome of the female produces a zygote with XX chromosomes.
  2. Thus, the X sperm produces a female offspring.

Y sperm:

  1. Y sperm on combining with the X chromosome of the female produces a zygote with XY chromosomes.
  2. Thus, the Y sperm produces a male offspring.
