Question

What do nitrification and denitrification have in common?

Open in App
Solution

Nitrification:

  1. It is the process in which ammonia gets converted into its nitrite form and then further to nitrate with the help of nitrifying bacteria.
  2. It is an aerobic process (requires oxygen) and is carried out by chemoautotrophic bacteria.

Denitrification: It is the process whereby the nitrate present in the soil is reduced by denitrifying bacteria to nitrogen.

Similarities between both the processes:-

  1. Bacteria are required to carry out both processes.
  2. Both the processes require an optimum pH range lying between 6 to 8.
