Question

What happens during plasmolysis?

Open in App
Solution

  1. Plasmolysis is a common response in plant cells that have been exposed to hyperosmotic stress. The loss of turgor causes the live protoplast to forcefully separate from the cell wall. The vacuole is the primary driver of the plasmolytic process. Plasmolysis is a reversible process that occurs in living plant cells.
  2. If the cell is in a hypotonic solution, deplasmolysis or cytolysis can occur, resulting in a reduced external osmotic pressure and a net flow of water into the cell.
