What happens when methyl iodide is warmed with sodium metal?
Ethane is produced
When methyl iodide or methyl bromide is warmed with sodium metal in the presence of dry ether, ethane is produced.
2CH3I+2Na→H3C−CH3+2NaI
This reaction is called as Wurtz reaction.Methane cannot be prepared by this method. This method is not suitable for the preparation of alkanes with odd number of carbon atoms.
