What happens when (Give equations of the chemical reaction)
(i) A pinch of sodium hydrogencarbonate is added to ethanoic acid.
(ii) Ethanol is oxidised with acidified potassium dichromate.
(i) When a pinch of sodium hydrogencarbonate NaHCO3 is added to ethanoic acid (CH3COOH), brisk effervescene is formed due to evolution of CO2 gas.
NaHCO3 + CH3COOH → CH3COONa + H2O + CO2
(ii) When ethanol (C2H5OH) is oxidised with acidified potassium dichromate(K2Cr2O7), ethanoic acid is formed.
CH3CH2OH acidifiedK2Cr2O7−−−−−−−−−−−→ CH3COOH
