Question

What is C2 cycle?

Open in App
Solution

C2 cycle:

  1. The C2 cycle is light-dependent, known as the oxidative photosynthetic or carbon cycle or C2 cycle.
  2. The other name for the C2 cycle is photorespiration.
  3. It occurs in the chloroplasts.
  4. Under high concentrations of oxygen, the carbon dioxide that is fixed is lost.
  5. This process does not contribute to energy production or glucose synthesis.
  6. The enzyme RuBisCO acts on carbon dioxide instead of oxygen and then leads to the loss of fixed carbon.
  7. On the flip side, photorespiration supports plant immune defenses. It helps in maintaining the redox balance in cells.
