A ligand is an ion, a molecule or a compound that is capable of donating a pair of electrons to a central atom.

Classification:
Unidentate ligands contain only one donor atom. Eg. Cl
Bidentate ligands contain two donor atoms. Eg. Ethylenediamine
Tridentate ligands contain three donor atoms. Eg. Diethyltriamine.
Hexadentate ligands have six donor atoms. Eg. EDTA
Chelating ligands are those that produce a ring like structure called chelate.
