Question

what is plasma membrane write about its function

Open in App
Solution

Dear student,
Plasma membrane is the membrane that surrounds a cell and acts as a boundary between the cell and its environment.
Plasma membrane regulates the entry and exit of all molecules in a cell. The plasma membrane is like the guard that protects the interior of cell and allows certain molecules to pass through it, depending on the requirement of the cell. This membrane is composed of a phospholipid bilayer, which is two layers of phospholipids. cholesterol molecules are located all throughout the surface of membrane.Proteins are also present in plasma membrane, some are periphery and others are integral proteins.

Functions:
  1. Protection: The plasma membrane protects the cell from its surroundings.
  2. Transport: Plasma membrane is selectively permeable to ions and organic molecules, and do not allow everything to pass through it. Movement across the membrane is highly specific.
  3. The structures on their surface (proteins and carbohydrates) cells are able to communicate with each other and interact through signaling.
  4. Plasma membrane that surrounds the cytoplasm, may contain a number of additional attachments such as cilia that allow for the locomotion of the cell.
