Question

What is saponification? Write the reaction involved in this process.

Open in App
Solution

The process in which esters (RCOOR) are converted into carboxylic acid salts (RCOONa) and Ethanol (C2H5OH) by reacting them with a suitable base such as Sodium hydroxide (NaOH) is known as saponification reaction.

The reaction involved in this process is:

CH3COOC2H5NaOHCH3COONa+C2H5OH(Ethylacetate)(Sodiumacetate)(Ethanol)

In the given chemical reaction, Ethyl acetate (CH3COOC2H5) in the presence of NaOH forms Sodium acetate (CH3COONa) and Ethanol.
