What is the chemical name of ionic compound MgCl2?
Magnesium Chloride
Ionic compound have a rule of naming -
1. The cation is named at first followed by anion.
2. An anion is added with suffix.
The monatomic anions are named by adding "-ide" to the root of the name of the nonmetal that forms the anion. Chlorine forms a monoatomic anion during the formation of MgCl2. The anion part is obtained by adding "-ide" to chlorine(non-metal) gives the name of "chloride" whereas the cation part is simply the name of the metal i.e,, Magnesium.
Hence, the chemical name of MgCl2 is Magnesium chloride.
