While adding H2 to alkyne, if the reduction is to be stopped at the alkene stage, the catalyst needs to be poisoned with CaCO3/BaSO4/quinoline. Addition of Cl2 in presence of CCl4 takes place by anti addition. (Two substituents are added to the opposite sides of a π bond).
