Question

What is the ratio of sigma and pi bonds in benzene?

Open in App
Solution

Sigma bond:

The strongest chemical covalent bond that formed between atomic orbitals because of head-on overlapping.

pi bond:

The chemical covalent bond is formed by the Lateral overlapping of two lobes of an orbital with two lobes of another orbital of atom, which is known as the pi bond.

The ratio of sigma and pi bonds in benzene:

  1. The formula of the benzene is C6H6.
  2. In the benzene ring, there is three double bond and so from three double bonds, three pi bond is formed.
  3. Sigma bonds are present in benzene- six sigma bonds between carbon-carbon atoms and six sigma bonds between carbon and hydrogen atoms, a total of 12 sigma bonds.
  4. The ratio of sigma and pi bonds is = 123 = 41or4:1.
The ratio of σ and π bonds in benzene is
