What is the reason for graft rejection?
T cell mediated immune rejection
MHC incompatibility
During a kidney or a heart transplant, it is very important to find a suitable organ donor. MHC molecules help in self and non-self recognition because MHC molecules differ from one person to another. If the MHC of the donor and recipient do not match, the T cells recognise the new graft as non-self and launch an attack. This leads to the rejection of the graft by the patient's immune system.
