Question

What is the shape of the p-orbital?

Open in App
Solution

p-orbital:

  • It has a dumb-bell shape. It is distinguished in three different orbitals such as px, py, and pz.
  • Each orbital contains two regions of probability which are opposite sides of the nucleus with x, y, and z-axis.

The following is a detailed description of the p-shape orbitals:

  • An electron is found to have an equal probability of the pair that is located in any of the three directions at any moment.
  • The π-bond overlaps each other like a side-way p-p overlap in which the π-bond is the electron cloud above the sigma bond due to high energy electrons.
  • The filled p-orbital has six electrons which are three pairs which show each pair occupied one of the perpendicular dumb-bell.
  • Starts with 2p and higher p-orbitals are 3p, 4p, 5p, 6p, and 7p are more complex so it has a spherical node as well.
