Question

What was the primary challenge for the production of insulin using rDNA technology?

Solution

Problem in rDNA approach:

  1. The biggest issue in using the rDNA approach to produce insulin was getting it assembled into its mature state.
  2. As a result, the scientists had to use reverse transcriptase and the mature mRNA of the insulin gene to create mature insulin.
  3. This process is known as cDNA technology
  4. It involves creating a complementary DNA sequence of the mRNA and inserting it into the bacteria as a gene of interest.
  5. The C peptide, which is not found in mature insulin, is found in the basic precursor of insulin known as proinsulin.
