KMnO4 is an oxidising agent, Hence salt must contain anion that can be oxidise to higher oxidation state. Hence salt must contain sulphide (SO23) which on oxidation with KMnO4 give (SO24) sulphate and KMnO4 himself reduces to MnO2 i.e. pink colour of KMnO4 discharge.
