When a sportsman runs the muscle cells of the calf function vigorously, this results in oxygen deficit in the muscle cells. So, Glucose is broken down anaerobically to release energy molecules faster, resulting in production of lactic acid. The accumulation of lactic acid results in muscle cramps.
