Question

Which compound is treated with KCN to get butane nitrile?

Open in App
Solution

Dear Student

To obtain butane nitrile from KCN the substrate must undergo the nucleophilic substitution reaction. So by this there are several possibility of the substrate which can react with KCN to form butane nitrile.
Such substrate are as 1-propanol or propyl halide.
The reaction is shown below:

CH3CH2CH2Cl +KCN CH3CH2CH2CN +KClpropyl chloride butane nitrileCH3CH2CH2OH +KCN CH3CH2CH2CN +KOHpropanol butane nitrile

This reaction is better shown by the propyl halide as the OH group is not a better leaving group hence propanol do not give feasible reaction with KCN to produce butane nitrile in a better yield
