The steric number of XeF4 is 6. It has 4 bond pairs and two lone pairs.
The four atoms of fluoride bond with four electrons (see figure). These all four are in the same plane. The two non-bonded pairs of electrons(lone pair ) are set at the perpendicular axis to minimise the repulsion between lone and bond pair of electrons and hence the molecular geometry will be square planar.
