Solution

Accessory Pigments

  1. Accessory pigments are compounds that absorb light and are found in photosynthetic organisms, that work along with chlorophyll a.
  2. Carotenoids and phycobilins act as accessory pigments in photosynthesis along with chlorophylls.
  3. Carotenoids or tetraterpenoids are red, orange or yellow pigments that are produced by algae, bacteria and several plants.
  4. Carotenoids give a specific colour to vegetables like pumpkin, carrots and corn.
  5. Phycobilins are pigments that capture light and are found in cyanobacteria and the chloroplasts of red algae. They consist of chromophore cells which makes them coloured.
  6. Photosynthesis is the mechanism by which plants use sunlight, carbon dioxide, and water to produce energy in form of glucose and oxygen.
  7. Chlorophylls are present in the chloroplast of the plant cell and are of two kinds which are chlorophyll a and chlorophyll b.
