Question

Why can't plasmolysis occur in animal cells?

Open in App
Solution

Plasmolysis:

  1. The movement of water out of the cell, causing it to shrink, is called plasmolysis.
  2. It takes place when the cell is placed inside a hypotonic solution.
  3. A hypotonic environment is when the concentration of water in the cytoplasm is less than that of the external solution.
  4. Water moves out of the cytoplasm and vacuole and into the extracellular space.
  5. Due to this the protoplast shrinks away from the cell wall.
  6. Plasmolysis does not occur in animal cells as they do not have cell walls.
