Question

Why charge carriers are not present in depletion region ?

Open in App
Solution

Explanation

  1. After joining p-type and n-type semiconductors, electrons from the n-region near the p-n interface tend to diffuse into the p-region.
  2. As electrons from n-region near the p-n interface diffuse, they leave positively charged ions in the region whereas when holes from the p-region near the p-n interface begin to diffuse leaving fixed ions with negative charge.
  3. So, a depletion region is formed where the charge carriers have all diffused away or have been forced away by electric field.
  4. Therefore, the only elements left in the depletion region are ionized donor or acceptor impurities.

Hence charge carriers are absent in the depletion region.
