Why does a clinical thermometer have a kink in its stem?

As soon as the thermometre is taken out of our mouth, i.e., from a hotter region to a colder region, the mercury in it starts contracting and tends to flow back into the bulb. The kink in the stem prevents the mercury from falling back immediately, thereby giving us the accurate reading of our body temperature.
