Question

Why is oxygen toxic to anaerobic bacteria?

Open in App
Solution

Anaerobic bacteria:

  1. Bacteria that can survive in absence of oxygen are called anaerobic bacteria.
  2. Anaerobic organisms do not have the defense mechanism required for the protection of enzymes from oxidants.
  3. Reduction of oxygen produces superoxide ions which cause intercellular damage and produce reactive oxygen species which cause intercellular damage.
  4. Therefore, presence of oxygen can destroy anaerobic bacteria.
