Why plasmolysis doesn't occur in dead plants?

Open in App
Solution

Plasmolysis:

  1. It is a response of any cell that is exposed to hyperosmotic stress.
  2. The loss of turgor produces a drastic detachment of the protoplasm from the cell wall causing shrinkage of cell.
  3. The literal meaning of plasmolysis is breakage of plasma membrane.
  4. It is a reversible process.
  5. It is a typical characteristic of plant cells.

Plasmolysis doesn't occur in dead plants because of the following reasons:

  1. Dead cells have extremely shrunken protoplasm with almost no moisture content.
  2. The loss of water through such cells is almost impossible.
  3. Therefore, plasmolysis can not occur in dead plants.
