Central and state governments have initiated a number of programmes for conserving forest and wildlife. Governments have set up national parks and wildlife sanctuaries to protect forests and endangered wildlife. A very important conservation measure has been the Project Tiger programme, which was tiger conservation programme launched in April 1973 by the Government of India. The objective of this programme was to save tigers from extinction. Since tigers are at the apex of the food chain, preserving tigers would also involve preserving forests and the ecosystem on which tigers depend for survival. As a result of this programme, the population of tigers has increased significantly in India.
