Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya was an Indian engineer, scholar, statesman and Diwan of Mysore from 1912 to 1918. He received India's highest honour, the Bharat Ratna, in 1955. He was the architect of the Krishnarajasagara dam – or Brindavan gardens. It is one of the biggest dams in India, which irrigate a hundred and twenty thousand acres of land. He rescued the Bhadravati Iron and Steel Works – as its Chairman from becoming extinct. He established Visvesvaraya College of Engineering and encouraged girls to attend school. Bengaluru implemented irrigation system in Karnataka.
